Overview

What Is a Transformer Monitor?

Transformer monitor working principle showing PT100 sensor and fiber optic hot spot measurement inside transformer winding

A transformer monitor is an electronic device or integrated system that continuously measures, displays, and logs the critical operating parameters of a power transformer — most importantly winding temperature and oil temperature — and automatically controls cooling fans while triggering alarm and trip outputs whenever safe limits are exceeded.

Modern transformer monitor devices fall into two main technology families:

1. PT100 Resistance Temperature Controllers — the industry-standard solution for dry-type transformers. Sensors are embedded in the A, B, C phase windings and the controller (such as the INNO BWDK-326 series) provides winding temperature display, cooling fan control, over-temperature alarm, and trip relay output.

2. Fluorescent Fiber Optic Hot Spot Systems — the advanced solution for high-voltage oil-immersed power transformers. Armored fiber optic sensors directly measure winding hot spot temperature with 100% EMI immunity, 140 kV high-voltage isolation, and 25+ year calibration-free operation.

Both types connect to SCADA, BMS, and DCS platforms via RS485 Modbus RTU, 4-20mA analog, or IEC 61850 communication protocols. A properly specified transformer monitor extends asset life by 20–30%, prevents catastrophic insulation failure, and enables condition-based maintenance in place of costly time-based inspection.

Why It Matters

Why Transformer Temperature Monitoring Is Critical

Overheating is the single leading cause of transformer failure and shortened service life. Once winding insulation begins to degrade thermally, the damage is irreversible — yet it builds silently, invisible to periodic inspection until a costly failure occurs.

50% Insulation life lost for every 10°C temperature rise above rated limit (IEC 60076-7)

Periodic inspection misses developing faults

Thermal defects between scheduled checks can evolve into catastrophic failure. A continuous transformer monitor provides real-time visibility with instant alarm output.

Hot spots are the highest-risk failure points

Winding hot spots can exceed average oil temperature by 20–30°C. Without direct measurement via PT100 or fiber optic transformer monitor sensors, hot spots remain undetected.

Proactive monitoring extends transformer life 20–30%

Condition-based maintenance guided by real-time transformer monitor data reduces emergency repairs and significantly extends transformer asset life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Transformer Monitor FAQ

Answers to the most common questions about dry-type and oil-immersed transformer monitor products and applications.

What is a transformer monitor?

A transformer monitor is a device or system that continuously measures, displays, and records key operating parameters of a transformer — most importantly winding temperature and oil temperature — to prevent overheating, detect early faults, and enable condition-based maintenance. INNO transformer monitors range from basic PT100 winding temperature controllers (BWDK series) for dry-type transformers to comprehensive fiber optic hot spot monitoring systems for oil-immersed power transformers.

What is the difference between a dry-type and oil-immersed transformer monitor?

Dry-type transformer monitors (such as the BWDK-326 series) use PT100 platinum resistance sensors embedded directly in winding coils to measure winding temperature. Oil-immersed transformer monitors include WTI and OTI devices, and increasingly use fiber optic sensors for direct hot spot measurement inside the oil-filled winding — immune to the strong electromagnetic fields present in high-voltage transformers.

How does a dry-type transformer temperature monitor work?

A dry-type transformer temperature monitor uses PT100 platinum resistance temperature sensors embedded in the A, B, and C phase windings. As winding temperature changes, the PT100 resistance changes proportionally. The controller reads all three sensors simultaneously, displays the maximum temperature, automatically starts cooling fans at the fan start threshold, triggers an alarm relay at the preset alarm temperature, and fires a trip relay at the critical over-temperature threshold.

What is PT100 and how accurate is it for transformer winding monitoring?

PT100 is a platinum resistance temperature detector (RTD) with a nominal resistance of 100 ohms at 0°C. PT100 sensors are embedded directly in transformer windings and provide accurate winding hot spot temperature measurement with ±1% FS accuracy (Class B). They are the industry-standard solution for dry-type transformer temperature monitoring per JB/T 7631.

What is the BWDK-326 transformer temperature controller?

The BWDK-326 is INNO's most popular dry-type transformer monitor controller. It provides three-channel PT100 winding temperature monitoring, automatic fan start/stop control with a fan exerciser function, over-temperature alarm relay, and over-temperature trip relay. Available in multiple variants: 326D (base), 326E (4-20mA), 326F (RS485), 326G (ambient sensor), 326I (iron core sensor), and 326EF (combined). All variants comply with JB/T 7631 and CE standards.

What is transformer hot spot temperature monitoring?

Transformer hot spot temperature is the highest temperature point within the transformer winding. Hot spot temperature can exceed the measured oil temperature by 15–35°C and is the critical parameter governing insulation aging according to IEC 60076-7. INNO's armored fluorescent fiber optic sensors are specifically designed for direct hot spot measurement in both dry-type and oil-immersed transformer windings.

What is the maximum safe winding temperature for a dry-type transformer?

Maximum safe winding temperature depends on the insulation class. For Class F insulation: typical alarm at 130–150°C with trip at 155–170°C. For Class H insulation: alarm at 155–165°C with trip at 180°C. Every 10°C rise above the rated operating temperature halves the remaining insulation life per IEC standard. INNO BWDK-326 transformer monitors allow users to set alarm and trip thresholds according to their transformer's insulation class.

What is WTI and OTI in oil-immersed transformer monitoring?

WTI (Winding Temperature Indicator) monitors the winding hot spot temperature in oil-immersed transformers using top oil temperature measurement combined with a thermal image of winding temperature rise. OTI (Oil Temperature Indicator) measures the top-layer oil temperature directly. Both are typically fitted with alarm contacts and cooling control outputs. INNO supplies both traditional analog WTI/OTI instruments and digital versions with RS485 and 4-20mA outputs.

Why use fiber optic sensors for oil-immersed transformer temperature monitoring?

Fiber optic sensors offer three critical advantages: (1) Complete EMI immunity — no electronics at the measurement point; (2) High-voltage isolation — INNO armored probes withstand 140 kV; (3) Calibration-free operation for 25+ years — the fluorescence decay-time measurement principle is based on physical constants that do not drift with age, unlike thermocouple or RTD sensors that require periodic recalibration.

Can INNO transformer monitors integrate with SCADA or BMS systems?

Yes. All INNO transformer monitors with communication options support RS485 Modbus RTU (Model F), 4-20mA analog output (Model E), or both combined (Model EF). Fiber optic temperature measurement systems additionally support IEC 61850. Integration with any SCADA, DCS, BMS, or EMS platform is straightforward using these standard industrial protocols — no proprietary middleware required.

Can INNO provide OEM transformer monitor products?

Yes. As a direct manufacturer, INNO fully supports OEM and ODM arrangements including private-label branding, custom housing designs, custom firmware, modified communication interfaces, custom probe geometries, and white-label documentation. Many transformer manufacturers factory-install INNO monitoring systems under their own brand. Contact INNO via the inquiry page to discuss minimum order quantities and OEM partnership terms.

What certifications should a transformer temperature controller have?

For international markets: CE marking (EMC Directive and Low Voltage Directive), RoHS, and ISO 9001. For the Chinese domestic market: compliance with JB/T 7631 and EMC test per IEC 61000-4 / GB/T 17626 is required. All INNO BWDK-series temperature controllers carry all of these certifications. Certificate documents are available for download on the INNO website.
